Graduate Fashion Week 2011 - University of Central Lancashire - Jenna Horan

Here at 18ANDEAST we were eagerly awating the UCLAN show at GFW last weekend. One of our very own placement students Jenna Horan showcased her final year collection. We caught up with Jenna after the show...

Absolutely love this outfit - a ladylike feel with a masculine twist.

Braces were all over the Graduate Fashion Week catwalk...a wardrobe staple for next season?

Where did your inspiration come from when designing your collection?

My collection took inspiration from from traditional high society, in particular debutante balls focusing on the typically feminine styling with hourglass shaping, however modernising the look by adding a slightly androgynous twist, introducing straight fit shapes, dropping the waist of the hourglass and adding in shirt detailing and mens braces. Masculine suiting and shirting fabrics are contrasted with feminine tulles and chiffons.

What do you think of doing internships? (Jenna did hers with us!)

Having an industrial placement year is a great introduction to the fashion industry, working in industry teaches more commercial design and gives a taste of what life will be like after university. Personally I think it is one of the most important and enjoyable years that fully prepares students to work after university and also confirms that it is the right career path to be on.

Which designers do you admire?

Alice Temperley’s designs over the last few seasons have been lovley, I like her classic take on feminine designs and her more toned down colour pallette, and use of embellishments give the collections a chic, affluent appeal.Yohji Yamamoto never fails to impress using innovative and experimental pattern cutting techniques throughout his collections.I can't forget to mention Valentino and his delicate feminine creations, in particular his SS11 couture show was lovely!

Massive congratulations to Jenna on her fab collection!
